James has worked as a stone mason since he was 16 years old. Over the course of his 25+ year career he has studied under preeminent landscape architects and worked alongside some of the nation's leading architects, builders, engineers and craftsmen. The long arc of his career has encompassed everything from designing and developing grand, multi-million dollar estates to creating thoughtful residential landscapes that naturally extend the home's architecture.
James leads a team of designers, craftsmen, horticulturalists and collaborators who embody Piatra's core values of integrity, honesty and hard work.

Manifesto
I have come to know and appreciate pride of work through years as a designer and stone mason. Not the kind of pride that comes from acquiring money or prestige, but the kind that comes from working with purpose and creating something meaningful with my own two hands. Something that adds to the beauty and harmony of the world.
Working closely with the earth has taught me the importance of work itself, of humility, of patience, of cooperation, of balance and of integrity. I strive to embody these principles in both my life and my work.
